Several French schools have been forced to close after new cases of COVID-19 among students and more than 2,000 lessons have been canceled, says French Education Minister Jean-Michel Blanquer.
As of early last week, only 28 elementary schools had been forced to close completely due to the spread of the infection; earlier this week, the number had risen to 81.
The fear of a second wave of transmission is evident in France after the country reported daily figures on more than 10,000 new COVID-19 cases over the weekend. The increase is also noticeable in healthcare. More than 2,700 people were admitted during the week, of which more than 600 required intensive care.
So far, just over 30,000 people in France have lost their lives as a result of the pandemic.
