Valentine’s Day is Sunday. At the same time, it is important to be aware of who you speak to on dating sites, so that you do not run into a scammer.

According to the Swedish Anti-Theft Association (SSF), 1,024 of so-called romantic frauds were reported to the police in 2020, an increase of 12 percent compared to 2019.

Women account for 74 percent of reports and the average cost of fraud in 2019 was SEK 350,000.

“Keep an eye out and if you’re not sure who you’re in contact with, look up images online. There you can see if the images come from other profiles or have previously been posted on websites,” says Per Klingvall, head of consulting. on SSF, in a press release.

The red flags for scammers are that they are too good to be true, they have a profession of status, they express themselves artificially, and mostly they ask to be sent money.
