Joe Biden withdraws US support for Saudi Arabia’s war in Yemen.
Despite this, the Saudis react positively to the remarks of the newly appointed president.
As one of his first foreign policy moves, Joe Biden vows that his government will stop US support for Saudi Arabia’s war in Yemen.
He said so in his speech in Washington on Thursday, where he first outlined the country’s new foreign policy after four years with Donald Trump.
“This war must end,” Biden said, adding that the decision will also affect US sales of weapons used by Saudi Arabia in the war.
– (The war) has created a humanitarian and strategic disaster, Biden continued, pledging humanitarian aid to Yemen.
However, the United States will continue to support Saudi Arabia’s defense of its territory, he added.
And the Saudi response focused on the latter.
“We welcome Biden’s commitment to work with the Kingdom to defend its sovereignty and resist threats,” the Saudi state news agency said.
The statement makes no mention of the withdrawal of US aid in the Yemen war, but praises Biden’s willingness to use diplomacy to end the crisis.
Biden’s ex-horse, Barack Obama, initially supported the Saudis in the war, while Donald Trump forged even closer ties and signed new arms deals with them.
The war can be seen largely as a war of positions between regional rivals Saudi Arabia and Iran. The UN has long described the situation in Yemen as the world’s worst humanitarian disaster.
