Sarah Sjöström won immediately when the International Swimming League (ISL) began its first competition in Budapest. In the first leg of the competition, 100 meter butterfly, he finished in 56.00. Which gave the team nine points.
The competition is Sjöström’s first after a nine-month crown break.
– It felt absolutely fantastic. I was very nervous before the first race. But I tried to tell myself that it’s normal to be that when you haven’t competed in so long and that you don’t just forget how to do it, says the 27-year-old.
In ISL, swimmers compete in teams and the Swedish superstar belongs to Energy Standard. In Sjöström’s second competition of the night, 4×100 meters freestyle, his team (Energy Strandard 2) won, which was one of two Energy Standards teams in the race. Also in the third competition of the Swede, 50 meters freestyle, she won in 23.48 and took 10 points for the team.
– I had four races in two hours, so it was a difficult start. In normal cases, you might have a competition on the first day after a long break, but my body feels really good and I’m called to continue the competition.
In the last stage of the night, the women’s medley relay, Sjöström was eliminated and swam the last distance which was freestyle. It was an even finish but his team had to settle for second place.
But Sarah Sjöström I was very satisfied with their efforts.
– I managed to look very far in the curves underwater. I am very proud of that. I’ve never been really good at it and it was a great feeling to get it.
The competition continues at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday.
Due to the corona pandemic, this year’s ISL will be swimming in one place, in a bubble in Budapest, for just over five intense weeks starting Friday. But like in many other sports, the stands are empty.
– I didn’t think much about it to be honest, I was more focused on it being my first competition.
– But it’s great when you’ve swam in Budapest before. They have many swimming fans there. You miss them in the stands, but I hope there are many who watched from home, says Sjöström.
