Sara Danius’ diaries are donated to the Royal Library; the question is who can read them

Sara Danius passed away on October 12 of last year. Then she had been permanent secretary since June 1, 2015 but was forced to resign from the position on April 12, 2018 and then also leave the Academy on February 26, 2019. This after fierce internal conflicts within the Academy as result of the accusations against Jean-Claude Arnault. A scandal that was revealed by Dagens Nyheter on November 21, 2017.

Jean-Claude Arnault was convicted later for two rapes to two and a half years in prison.

Now the family has decided to hand over Sara Danius’ personal archive to the Royal Library, which consists of some 20 moving boxes. The family and KB have been in contact for just over six months and the file is now a repository at KB. Now the KB staff will review the file and then decide which parts may be relevant for a final donation.

– Sara Danius was a tremendously exciting person, but we treated her archive in the same way as other personal archives, says Katinka Ahlbom, manager of KB’s Manuscripts, Maps and Images unit.

What parts of the file will be available immediately has not yet been determined. This is something that will be regulated between KB and the donor. Only towards the turn of the year does Katinka Ahlbom hope that this problem will be resolved.

Will the public be able to read the diaries of Sara Danius?

– We reason with the donor about the different parts of the file and in the end it may be that the family gives permission to those who want to read them. It may also be the case that the family assigns KB that task. But because they are now about to donate the file to us, they also say this is something they want the research to have access to, says Katinka Ahlbom.

Newspapers often contain information about third parties and are usually subject to certain restrictions. Katinka Ahlbom does not want to say if Sara Danius herself has expressed any will in that sense.
