Robinho.
Robinho, who was recently raped, signed for Santos.
But there will be no game at the great Brazilian club.
The parties are now going their separate ways, under pressure from sponsors.
The return of the 36-year-old Brazilian to parent club Santos has been debated.
In 2013, the former star of the national team played for AC Milan. Four years later, he was sentenced to nine years in prison for the gang rape of a woman, said to have taken place in the meantime in Milan.
Have continued playing
But already in 2015, the Brazilian left Italy and since then he has played football in China and Turkey. In this way he has managed to escape his prison sentence.
The contract with Santos was possible because the laws of Brazil do not allow the extradition of its own citizens. But the signing has raised emotions in the country and after pressure from the sponsors, the parties are now going their separate ways, a week after the signing.
Break the contract
“Santos and Robinho have mutually decided to terminate the contract signed on October 10 so that the player can concentrate exclusively on defending his court in Italy,” Santos wrote in a statement posted on Twitter on Friday.
The AFP news agency writes that the Brazilian television channel Globo Sports has published an excerpt from a recording used by Italian prosecutors. Robinho is said to say: “I laugh because I don’t care. The woman was very drunk. She doesn’t even know what happened.”
Robinho claims he is innocent and has appealed the verdict. He has played 100 games for Brazil and has also played for Real Madrid and Manchester City.
