It was on July 31 of last year that Gert-Inge Bertinsson temporarily left the residence to solve a couple of cases in Markaryd.

The program included visits to Ica and the hairdresser.

– It was nothing strange. We would see each other again some time later, says the co-worker.

She says that Gert-Inge was in a good mood that day. Coexistence if someone should know. They had been a couple for 40 years.

– I was happy and positive. The next day, we had decided to go on an excursion to a Smaland destination. We both expected it.

But what would normally take a couple of hours now did not go as planned.

Hours passed and Gert-Inge shone with his absence. Family members finally started looking for him on their own and later in the evening, coworkers also reported the disappearance to the police.

Although the signal

– At 02-03 at night, the mobile phone signal died, says Chief Prosecutor Gunilla Öhlin.

Now, after the police polls, you know that Gert-Inge was sitting in the barber’s chair at 16 o’clock.

During the harvest he was visited by a relative with whom he exchanged a few words. At 16.50 he should have left the room.

According to the police, everything says that he then got out of his car that was parked at Drottninggatan in Markaryd.

– I used to park the car there. That was also where his glasses were found on the ground, says prosecutor Gunilla Öhlin.

The suspicion is that this is where he also met the now-processed Ukrainian berry pickers, Oleksandr Traiduk, 48, and Yaroslav Lavryniv, 49.

They had gone to Sweden and were on their way through Sweden to pick berries. But on the trip north, the car had broken down.

According to the prosecutor, there must first have been thoughts of trying to fix the car in the shop. Later, the proposal came simply to try to steal another vehicle.

He was an easy victim

It was then that Gert-Inge had the misfortune to end up in the middle of the epicenter of events. Become an easy victim with a good car.

The two men accused of the crime were well trained and had previously been convicted of domestic violence.

Police have been unable to find out exactly where the abuse of death occurred.

But ten days after the disappearance, the body was found after Gert-Inge in a forest area south of Markaryd.

According to the prosecutor, there were injuries to both the chest and the head. In addition, the legs were fastened with a waistband. Both arms were glued together. There was also tape around his neck.

Was the victim still alive when the perpetrators left him in the woods?

“No, my opinion is that he was dead,” says the prosecutor.

In the lawsuit she writes:

“The defendants, together and in agreement, tied and taped Gert-Inge Bertinsson’s arms and legs, as well as around his neck, and took him to a forest area on the outskirts of Markaryd, where they left him. Gert-Inge Bertinsson died from this. “

For the cohabitants, the event is, of course, terribly horrible.

Many have shown compassion. It has facilitated the work of pain.

– Of course, life must go on. But it is not easy now. It all feels so unfair.

Thanks to the police

Sambon, however, would like to thank the police for their fantastic work. 80 police officers have worked on the investigation. More than 200 hearings have been held. The preliminary investigation is 2,200 pages.

After 20 and 126 days on the loose, the suspected killers were arrested in Germany and Poland, respectively.

Evidence against him includes DNA objects and fingerprints on pieces of tape. Also, Gert-Inge’s car had obviously been taken. Incidentally, it has never been found.

At one point, they should also have cleaned the car as evidence. Then, among other things, a voting card belonging to a cohabitant ended up on the ground, which was later found by a private person in northern Sweden.

However, both men deny the crime. Nor is there anything that links them to the place where the body of the 70-year-old man was found.

Called to testify

But the prosecutor is certain that the defendants are guilty of murder and car theft.

14 people are called to testify during the trial, one of them is Gert-Inge’s partner.

“I don’t want to look them in the eye in the courtroom, not after what they’ve done,” she says.
