Two Russian nationals were charged Thursday with suspected attempted murder of a critic of the Chechen regime in Gävle earlier this year.
According to Säpo, which carried out a preliminary investigation, the Chechen regime is suspected of being behind the act.
It was in February this year that a well-known critic of the Chechen regime and blogger was attacked with a hammer in his home, yet he managed to defend himself from the attack and then, according to Aftonbladet, made the attacker admit that he was coming from Moscow.
In light of this, and the fact that the assassination attempt is suspected of having links to the Chechen regime, the Säpo has carried out the preliminary investigation of the case.
“Intensified”
– The activities of foreign powers and attacks on Sweden have intensified and expanded. The fact that another regime may be suspected of being behind an assassination attempt is seen by the Security Police as an example of how intelligence activities have changed, says Daniel Stenling, head of counterintelligence for the Security Police.
The attack in Sweden is taken very seriously.
– It is obviously very serious that another regime is suspected of having links to an assassination attempt in Sweden of a person who also sought refuge here, after being threatened by the regime in his home country, says Daniel Stenling.
