Spencer Knight is one of the best known players in America. He’s making his third JVM and was the first goalkeeper to be drafted last year and most likely has many years ahead of him in the best league in the world. Tonight’s premiere against eternal rival Russia, you probably want to forget about it as soon as possible.
The goalkeeper was replaced midway through the second period. By then Russia had slipped to 4-1 after two quick goals triggered by less successful passes from the goalkeeper.
Legends on the Russian stand
Of course, Knight is not entirely to blame. The Russian leadership was well deserved. The draw parallel to the Soviet red machine of the 80s is always a bit at hand when a Russian team makes a few passes in a row.
But last night that parable wasn’t too far-fetched. Igor Larionov is on the bench as head of the Russian team. Not surprisingly, it has a lot to do with the bubbly hockey attack the Russians displayed.
America woke up late
When the Americans seemed the most calculated, the wind changed. At the end of the match, they also offered equal resistance. A couple of unnecessary Russian expulsions later, it was suddenly 4-3. Even if it wasn’t enough all the way, the American finale bodes well for the rest of the tournament for them.
Sweden begins the JVM with a match against the Czech Republic at 20 on the second night.
