Russia on tour – if Belarus falls

The Belarusian president has faced massive protests since the August presidential elections. And on Tuesday, Lukashenko issued a warning about what would happen if the regime fell.

– Do you know what we have come to as regards the Russian establishment and leadership? If Belarus falls, Russia will be next in line, he told various Russian media, according to the Russian state news agency Ria Novosti.

In an interview with the Russian media during the day, Lukashenko is said to have also admitted that “he may have been in power for too long.” However, the president affirmed that he is also the only one who can protect the country during the crisis.

No new elections in sight

Lukashenko has previously stated that he can accept a new election. But before that, it demands changes to the constitution.

At the same time, an opposition council has been formed demanding the immediate reelection and resignation of the president. Several members of the Council have been detained or forced to leave Belarus.

In the morning, AFP reported that opposition leader Maria Kolesnikova had been arrested on the border with Ukraine. The news came after Kolesnikova was reported abducted by masked men in a minibus in Minsk on Monday.

While colleagues are said to have been allowed to continue in Ukraine overnight Tuesday, Maria Kolesnikova is said to have been arrested, border personnel told AFP.

The Ukrainian data, on the other hand, indicates that the opposition leader does not want to cross the border. They mean he tore up his passport so he couldn’t get through.

In Minsk, the opposition calls a rally in support of Maria Kolesnikova overnight, reports Swedish radio.

Relations between Belarus and Russia are bad.
