Roland Nilsson on the requirements for players at IFK Gothenburg

Rain fell on Kamratgården as IFK Gothenburg prepared for Sunday’s final meeting with Falkenberg absent.

– You want to get onto the field as quickly as possible and start working with the players. It was fun, a good first practice. “We had to work with things that we already said yesterday that we had to work with,” says Roland Nilsson, who has not coached a club since 2012 (FC Copenhagen).

On Friday, “Rolle” sat down in a long meeting with his assistant Ferran Sibilia on how they should work in the future and what they should push. In general terms, it is about organizing the team better, especially on defense.

– I want us to become a unit, it has dispersed a bit. The individual things he does are not based on the way the team works. The effect can be good, but sometimes it goes completely crazy. We will try to find it, that when we do something, we do it with the team so that it does not spread. So that we don’t punish ourselves by making decisions that punish the team.

14 in a row without victory

– Suddenly we have to run home 50 meters at full speed because we have done something that makes us open the team that we should not do, or that we take risks in our attack game that we do not need, says the 56 year old, which of course is aware that it is not possible to control everything in detail.

– But the team and the players must know at a glance what is going to happen all the time. Above all, we will sit together and be more compact in our playing.

IFK Gothenburg are winless in 14 Allsvenskan matches and the players’ self-confidence is not at its peak, but Roland Nilsson believes the change in managerial position can help.

– I hope it already makes you feel that we are working in a positive direction, that there is something new to look forward to in the way we work. Then self-confidence also returns. Now there is a new opportunity to move forward and I think they have seen it, there is a will to do things the right way.

Skåne emphasizes that there will be no revolutionary changes, but that several things will be ruined.

– We can change a bit in some positions while it can be exactly the same in other positions. Some things that we are going to do we will not use, but we will do them all the time, while other things we can be more flexible. We must follow fixed principles.

Hectic days behind

How have the last days been?

– Hectic. When we beat Italy (with the U21 team) they were looking forward to a few quiet days, but then IFK Gothenburg called and asked if I was interested in a job and now I’m here. It went very, very fast. You feel a little … not one hundred percent when it comes to power. Many thoughts and sleep are affected, but tomorrow too!

Roland Nilsson does not want to reveal anything about the game system, but says there will be no talk of a model from the 80s or 90s with a direct 4-4-2 and many long balls.

– I have never done it as a coach, except in some matches because it suits those you meet, but that is not my philosophy. I want to take advantage of the areas offered by rivals and that we must move forward in a fast and good way. Whether it’s through short passes through midfield, or from the baseline straight to the forward, it depends on what the opponents offer.

“Demands that I will never adhere to”

There will also be a different set of requirements under the new coach, something that some players have wanted, according to information from GT. That it should be higher on the ceiling and there is a clearer winning mentality.

– I want us to become a unit, it has dispersed a bit. The individual things he does that are not based on the way the team works. The effect can be good, but sometimes it goes completely crazy. We will try to find it, that when we do something, we do it with the team so that it does not spread. So that we don’t punish ourselves by making decisions that punish the team.
