At 5:17 pm on New Year’s Eve, the first calls came to the police from residents in the area around Von Rosens väg in Rosengård in Malmö, who claimed to have heard gunshots. The crime scene was located in a courtyard surrounded by apartment buildings.
– It is clear that it resonates in that place, and although many people fire rockets at the moment, it is the people who perceive the shots, says Patrik Nyquist, leader of the preliminary police investigation.
After the heavy blows, an injured man was found on the ground outside. The man, who was 25 years old, was taken by ambulance to hospital, but could not save his life.
The police have carried out a technical investigation at the scene and have held interrogations with people at the scene and the victim’s family. Work continues through New Years Day when police are also on site to contact more witnesses.
The police have decided to initiate a special incident to have access to more resources in the investigation, but also to prepare for possible retaliation.
– This is about the situation in Malmö in general. They increase preparedness to minimize the risk of retaliation and work to create security, says Patrik Nyquist.
Murder on the same street 2018
In July 2018, a 23-year-old man was shot and killed on the same street. This time it was an alleged ordered murder committed by 23-year-old Samir Berglind, who has been sentenced to twelve years in prison for the murder.
The background to the New Year’s Eve incident, which was initially classified as murder or manslaughter, is still under investigation.
– In general, shootings have recently been linked to criminal settings. It could be retaliation or settlements, Nyquist says, continuing:
– Before having a complete picture of the situation, we must assume that this is also about. We have to take this into account, even if it doesn’t say so. This place has also been the subject of shootings in that environment in the past, so it’s not strange.
