The city of Gothenburg has hired the auditing firm KPMG to examine the reasons for the widespread spread of the Covid-19 infection in the city’s nursing homes this spring, with many deaths as a result.
The final report is ready. The bottom line is that many factors have contributed. Of note is the harsh criticism of some nursing homes against hospital care. Officials have responded anonymously to the question that they consider the main reason why COVID-19 entered their nursing home.
“In a short time we have received most of the hospitals, their knowledge has been under all criticism,” says one of those responsible and assures that one of the hospitals “pointed out lies about patients who came with symptoms and they say that patient (is ) completely healthy “.” His hygiene knowledge is under all criticism !! “he says in the investigation.
Another employee of a nursing home writes:
“In two of the cases, we know that the patients returned home and were infected with Covid-19 from the hospital. That is, without having been sampled, which means that we have not known. We did not have sufficient test material, but for the most part it was distributed to the hospital ”.
Another answer gives the same picture:
“That patients presented symptoms when they came from the hospital. The spread occurred because we had double rooms until June 2020. “
Others claim that staff brought the infection into the home.
“The staff has assimilated it. Especially those who have been positive without symptoms. The staff have not kept their distance and have not used the protective equipment in the correct way,” he says in one of the responses.
Another of those responsible points out that it took a long time before the tests began to be carried out on the personnel because it was the patients who had priority and that test equipment was lacking because it was concentrated in the hospitals.
KPMG investigation strikes Although there are great differences between when and how the different homes acted with measures to reduce the risk of spreading the infection and that some homes were already in the process of different measures before the implementation of the curfew in the city on March 12. .
“From other accommodations, instead, we can point out that it is only when the infection is seriously established within the city that real measures begin to be implemented and applied,” the researchers write.
The same applies to hygiene routines.
“The picture that is offered is that knowledge and compliance vary between units and between operations personnel.” Our interviews on the state of knowledge about basic hygiene routines before the pandemic indicate that the city, like many other municipalities, had challenges in this area, ”the researchers write.
The lack of materials, ignorance and high staff turnover are other reasons that are pointed out and that the researchers believe that the municipality must attend to avoid the spread of the infection in nursing homes in the future.
Elisabet Lann, Christian Democrats, the city council is responsible for the care of the elderly. Regarding the filing of an interim report in September, he told DN:
– I have been looking forward to the report and feel some relief. Actually, there are no surprises here, this is what we feel ourselves.
Marina Johansson of the Social Democrats pointed out what researchers thought were deficiencies in basic competence over hygiene routines, and that it was partly due to a lack of language skills, an issue the party had previously raised.
– In fact, not all staff have the prerequisites to absorb written information, they may need to practice putting on protective equipment and also receive other support to understand routines. It’s the language issue again, Johansson said.
