Norway has already withdrawn from the World Cup for the rest of the year.
Sportbladet experienced that Sweden would do the same.
Now the ski association confirms that they will not start in Davos or Dresden.
The World Cup premiere was completed in Ruka, Finland this weekend, despite some setbacks. A Norwegian leader first tested positive for covid-19 and then negative. An Icelander had to wait so long for his answer that he missed the sprint.
But there was competition and many of the best participated.
Ensembles in Davos
It will be different in Davos next weekend. Norway announced yesterday that it will not send any skiers there or to Dresden the following week. If nothing changes drastically regarding the pandemic and the spread of the infection, they also abstain from the Tour de ski.
The Swedish camp needed one more day to think things over. The riders stated that they wanted to compete if it was considered safe, but there were other parameters to consider.
Today at eleven o’clock they will give notice. According to information from Sportbladet, they would cancel their participation in Davos.
“A very difficult decision”
Then it will be. The national team will not start in Davos or Dresden and therefore will not compete again this year.
– That we have now decided to give up the next World Cup competitions in Davos and Dresden has been a very difficult decision, but it is made with the health of the cyclists in mind. We know that the decision generates disappointment among the assets but also for the audience in front of the television. No matter how much we want to compete and offer entertainment, this decision seems the only right thing when everything is turned upside down, says Daniel Fåhraeus, length manager of the Swedish Ski Association, in a press release.
No Swedes were infected in Ruka, but that doesn’t mean the same was guaranteed to happen at competitions in Switzerland and Germany.
– We learned some lessons about implementing a World Cup competition in Ruka. We found that it went well. But we may also have been lucky. As it stands, we cannot create an infection-free highway to and from Davos or Dresden. If things go wrong, the disease can have potentially serious consequences for the infected person. None of those involved are willing to take that risk, says Dr. Per “Pliggen” Andersson in the press release.
Sweden hopes to announce the Ski Tour.
