Retailers’ faith in the future has plummeted as a result of the crown crisis. The biggest is the loss in the grocery trade. But even in the grocery and e-commerce markets, the future is bleak, despite increased food sales and many online purchases.

Retailers’ expectations for the future have fallen to historically low levels, the Swedish Trade Trade Barometer shows. In April, the future indicator fell to 64.2 units, compared to 86.9 in March and 90.2 in February. An index value greater than 100 implies positive expectations for sales, profitability and the number of employees.
The worst is at the grocery store, that is, selling clothes, shoes, books, electronics, and other things. There, the index for future faith of traders has decreased from 80.7 in March to 54.4 in April.
But even in the grocery trade, expectations for the future are low, despite the fact that many grocery stores have increased sales in the past month.
– Given that we eat at home to a greater extent and have been fed to some extent, one might think that future faith would be much greater, but even there it is lost, says Karin Johansson, CEO of Swedish Trade, to TT.
This is in part due to the fact that border trade has stopped and that many service stores, such as the 7 students and the deli, have been difficult, according to Karin Johansson.
Many retailers also expect households to stay tougher on their wallets in the future. It is also evident that confidence in the future of electronic retailers decreased by 3.6 units in April, to 101.3.
– It is not at all the large influx you could expect. This is because we consume less than before and it impacts e-commerce. The only thing that’s growing is e-commerce with food, says Karin Johansson.
Trade Barometer
The future indicator for all retail trade falls by 22.7 units in April compared to last month and is seen at the lower level of 64.2. This is 35.8 units lower than last year’s April figures and the lowest level since measurements began.
An index number above 100 means positive future expectations and below 100 negative future expectations.
The worst is the case of wholesale purchase trade, where the future indicator has decreased by 26.3 units since March, to a record low of 54.4.
The grocery trade falls by 19.1 units compared to last month and reaches 73.9.
The future indicator of electronic commerce decreases 3.6 units to 101.3.
Expectations for the future are higher for the store itself than for the grocery market. By contrast, expectations for the future are higher for the industry than its own e-commerce store.
The survey, which was conducted April 1-14, is based on a telephone survey of 450 randomly selected store managers, store owners, and e-retailers.
