– People work in very precarious conditions with very harsh working conditions, but without having a job, there is no social safety net, says Kristina Zampoukos, PhD in social geography at Mid Sweden University in Östersund to Ekot.
What distinguishes The so-called direct work is that assignments are done through applications or online platforms, usually overnight. It can be anything from physical services like cleaning, taking food out of restaurants, and simple computer jobs to advanced assignments for educated people.
It is currently unclear how many gig workers there are in Sweden and the researchers will search for study participants on the platforms they use. The three-year research project is a collaboration with Uppsala University and has received five million in support from the Forte state research council.
The concept of live work originated in the United States and most of the limited research available is done there. Therefore, the researchers believe that it is very important to focus on the Swedish conditions.
– It is necessary to know more about these people: How is their working life? How is your daily life? How do they do it together? says Kristina Zampoukos.
The concert workers are classified as self-employed because they have no employer, but several different clients, and the jobs are mediated by the platform companies. Concert workers often lack protection in the workplace and the right to sick pay, and earnings are highly uncertain.
Clients write also reviews of online gig workers that other customers can see. As part of the study, the researchers themselves will be in charge of carrying out work.
– Trying to understand it from the inside, what it is about and how it feels, for example, recovering a bad judgment, says Kristina Zampoukos.
