The covid-19 vaccine will be here soon.

At the same time, new mutations of the virus have been discovered in both South Africa and the United Kingdom.

The mutations appear to be more contagious and the vaccine may work worse, according to South African researchers.

In a few days, large-scale vaccination will begin throughout the EU. In other parts of the world, vaccination has already started.

Now comes worrying information that new coronavirus mutations may be more resistant to the vaccine, writes The Guardian, referring to South African researchers.

“More contagious”

In both South Africa and the UK, new versions of the virus have been discovered in recent weeks. The mutation in the UK, called VUI 202012/01, is said to be 70 percent more contagious than the original virus.

The South African covid-19 mutation, dubbed 501Y.V2, in turn appears to be more than contagious than the version discovered in the UK.

New mutations have been discovered in South Africa and the United Kingdom.

Both versions of the virus are currently spreading in the British Isles, according to the country’s Health Minister Matt Hancock.

“The new variant is very concerning because it is more contagious and appears to have mutated more than the variant previously discovered in the UK,” he said of the South African version of the virus at a press conference Wednesday afternoon.

“Reinfection”

In South Africa, work to study the new version is in full swing.

– The South African version seems to spread more effectively among people and that is not good. That means we must do better to stop it, Richard Lessells, one of the researchers leading the study of the virus mutation in South Africa, tells The Guardian.

According to him, the mutation discovered in South Africa is more concerning than the one found in Great Britain.

– The mutation discovered in South Africa raises further concerns about the vaccine. Another thing that is concerning is reinfection, says Richard Lessells.

It is not clear if the new mutations have made the virus more harmful to health, but those who do get sick will have the same symptoms as the coronavirus they previously brought, according to Lessells.
