The driver’s license for jet skis should be a requirement in 2022, proposes the Swedish Transport Agency. But nautical organizations are critical of the proposal.
After several years of complaints about jet ski drivers driving buses and causing concern, the government commissioned the Swedish Transport Agency this summer to come up with a proposal for a driver’s license and compulsory training. The authority has now presented its work.
– This will facilitate the conditions to create order and order in the lake, says the Minister of Infrastructure, Tomas Eneroth (S).
It is proposed that everyone who drives a jet ski undergo one or two days of training to obtain a driver’s license.
– I think it is good that you develop both a theoretical and practical education, but also that you find a modern system with a digital driver’s license, says Tomas Eneroth.
“Not another summer”
The requirement for a driver’s license will take effect on January 1, 2022 as per the proposal.
– I wish we had an order next summer. I don’t want to experience another summer like the one we had with drivers who approached bathers disrespectfully and broke the rules we have at the lake, says Tomas Eneroth.
He says the opportunity to go faster should be tried, but he also points out that there are thousands of jet skis to train.
Easy to round
The Swedish Sailing Union, the Swedish Cruise Club and the Swedish Sailing Federation are critical of the proposal and believe it is easy to round up. They point out that next year there may be other boats on the water that people will bother about.
“Our proposal is simple, that all boats and vessels on the lake that can be driven at more than 35 knots are subject to the requirement of a driver’s license,” the organizations write in a press release.
Tomas Eneroth says he is not ruling out the requirement for a driver’s license for more vehicles in the future.
– Let’s go first where we see the biggest drawbacks and we do it when it comes to jet skis.

Education must consist of theoretical and practical elements. It is estimated that it will take one to two days.
After completing and passing the training, a digital driver’s license is issued. The person driving a jet ski must bring it along with a valid identity document to show at check-in.
Anyone who cannot present their driver’s license should be able to receive a fine. The same penalty also applies to those who borrow or rent a jet ski from someone who does not have a driver’s license.
In case of repeated violations of the requirements, it should be possible to revoke a driver’s license.
The Swedish Transport Agency also proposes that the authority have the right to approve and control training coordinators.
