Here, Mexico stands out with eight journalists killed in 2020. In India, four journalists were killed, in the Philippines three, and Honduras three.
Many of the victims in countries not ravaged by war investigated corruption, organized crime, or witnessed protests.
However, the proportion of journalists killed in countries at war continues to decline, according to Reporters Without Borders. Fewer journalists have worked in the field this year due to the pandemic.

The reporter Julio Valdivia Rodríguez of the newspaper El Mundo, who was found beheaded in the Mexican state of Veracruz.
Editor Víctor Fernando Álvarez Chávez, who worked for the local news site Punto x Punto Noticias, was found cut off in Acapulco in the same country.
Reporter Rakesh “Nirbhik” Singh of the Indian newspaper Rashtriya Swaroop was burned alive in his home, a massacre committed by a local official that Rakesh Singh criticized for corruption.
Journalists continue be subjected to serious violence at work. To many, it may appear that journalists who are killed are victims of the risks they face in the profession, such as watching an armed conflict, but the violence is increasingly directed at investigative journalists or reporters reporting on sensitive topics. We must remember that when a journalist is attacked, it is also an attack on everyone’s right to be informed, ”says Erik Halkjaer, president of Reporters Without Borders (RSF Sweden), in a press release.
Previously, the organization reported that around the world, 387 journalists are imprisoned for their profession. That’s as much as a year ago, a historically high level.
