Favorite tipper Sadyr Khaparov was tumultuously released from prison in connection with the political chaos that erupted after the criticized parliamentary elections in early October. According to him and his supporters, the charges for which he was convicted, for having been involved when a governor was taken hostage, were politically motivated.

The unrest that followed the parliamentary elections prompted Prime Minister Kubatbek Boronov to resign. Sadyr Khaparov’s prison sentence was lifted after his release and he quickly became the country’s acting leader. However, he resigned in mid-November to run in the presidential elections.

Japarov’s critics fear that the country could win a more authoritarian government if it wins. The choice is not only about who will be president, but also about the powers of the president, which Khaparov wants to be greater.

He has presented himself as an uncompromising opponent of organized crime and corruption. He has also pledged more money for health care, which is believed to have led to increased support for him, especially in rural areas.

At a campaign rally in the capital, Bishkek, Sadyr Khaparov called for understanding and respect.

– We are a country, a people, he tells his followers.

According to opinion polls, the support for him is great and he could get more than 50 percent of the votes already in the first round, which would make him win without any second round.
