Record amount of scrap found in Göta älv

This summer, the municipal cleaning boat “Renström” has cleaned the canal in central Gothenburg more than usual. They have increased cleaning from three days a week to basically five days a week. The reason is the increase in garbage and scrap that has ended up and has been thrown into the water.

When Dennis Andersson and his colleague Carlos Torres went out on their daily cleanup day Wednesday, they collected a record amount of scrap in three hours. It was so much that not everything could fit on the boat. Among other things, a fence section, a shopping cart, an electric scooter and about 15 common bicycles were found. Most of them reached the height of Brunnsparken.

– The water was clear yesterday, so we were able to see all this trash and pick it up, but there is more, says Dennis Andersson.

They mostly collect disposable items, jars, and bottles after people have finished eating and drinking. But they can also pick up bicycles, electric scooters, shopping trolleys, board scraps, lifebuoys, and canal logs. The number of electric scooters is the one that is increasing the most.

Dennis Andersson says that before the holidays they bought a motorcycle at Drottningtorget.

What do you think of people who throw things into the water?

– You can improve, throw food containers, bottles and jars in the trash. Trash is not necessary in the canal, says Dennis Andersson.

Smaller plastic bags in the canal.

According to Ercan Görgülü, group manager at Park og natur, there are two places where a lot of people gather. One is in Lejontrappan and the other is in Radisson Blu Scandinavia Hotel.

– If the weather is good, people eat a lot outside and many food containers end up in the water. One of the reasons is that they are thrown into the water, but also that people leave the packaging on the ground and get up and go. Then they blow into the water, says Ercan Görgülü.

On the other hand, something that has dropped are plastic bags, and he believes that it is due to the increase in taxes on them.

But now it is soon finished for “Renström” for the season. The ship is soon brought ashore and cleaning is only done from land. Dennis Andersson believes that, in the meantime, much of the garbage will sadly end up in the sea and the river Göta.
