Real Sociedad continues in the Europa League after last drama

The meeting in Naples was the first since the Naples soccer label changed its name to Estadio Diego Armando Maradona, in honor of the recently deceased club icon. And there was a lot of drama when Europa League Group F was decided.

When the 90 minutes were played, Napoli led 1-0 after a good shot from distance by Piotr Zielinski on a half volley in the first half. Real Sociedad were eliminated from that team, as Jesper Karlsson’s AZ Alkmaar also drew 1-1 against Croatian Rijeka.

Then everything happened instantly.

In Naples, where Alexander Isak was replaced with just a quarter left, attacking partner Willian José thundered at 1-1 in extra time. Thus, both Napoli and Real Sociedad were in that position farthest from the group.

But Alkmaar, who had Jesper Karlsson sent off in the 81st minute, could still send off Real Sociedad if the team score a winning goal in Rijeka. Instead, it was the other way around. Croatian Ivan Tomecak made it 2-1 against Alkmaar’s ten and so Real Sociedad could breathe relieved.

Napoli won the group with 11 points, ahead of Real Sociedad with 9 and Alkmaar with 8.

Later in the afternoon Milan has already won, without Zlatan Ibrahimovic, with 1-0 away against Sparta Prague. Norwegian Jens Petter Hauge scored the goal.

Lille lost at the same time (2-3) away to Celtic and thus Milan won the group.
