Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia were quarantined on November 25 after being infected with COVID-19. Queen Silvia tells on TV4’s “Kungahuset 2020” how she was surprised by the diagnosis of her son and daughter-in-law.

– I reacted like all the other mothers. Of course, it was a great shock. They also have young children, says the queen.

– I had several questions. How are they now, where did they get sick? We had really tried to be careful, we tested everyone and yet they got sick, he says.

Difficult to detect infection

She says the family still doesn’t know how they got infected and says it is difficult to trace.

– Fortunately, they are fine now even though they still have a bit of a cold, he says on the show.

Queen Silvia also tells of the pain of her brother Walter who died in October. Not because of covid-19 but because of Alzheimer’s. She says she doesn’t know if she has “managed the pain yet” because it happened so recently.

– Alzheimer’s is a terrible disease. Painful, you gradually become nothing in your consciousness. Can’t get answer, can’t find correct one. But you get mad, she says.

Sofia’s care aide and honorary president

The queen says her brother’s illness was very difficult to handle, “especially in the last few months.” She explains that she thought she had learned a lot when her mother died of the same disease, but that this time it was a “completely new situation.”

In the TV4 documentary “Kungahuset 2020”, Princess Sofia also tells how she works as a care assistant at Sophiahemmet in Stockholm, an institution of which she is also the honorary president. She says she wants to make an effort to support and relieve staff during the pandemic.

– I’m a bit of an all-rounder, I help where needed. Much in the kitchen where I organize breakfasts and lunches and dishes. I clean the rooms, I make the beds, I give patients easier care, and I drive patients to and from the operating rooms, says Princess Sofia.

“One in the gang”

– I get a fantastic response from both patients and staff. I was worried, you meet patients in very intimate situations, they are extradited, some go through their most difficult period. But it’s going really well, she says.

She says she is in Sophiahemmet a couple of times a week while she has her official duties as a princess the rest of the time. She calls it “different worlds” and says she “likes balance.”

– Here I am one of the gang, I appreciate it, says Princess Sofia in the program.

Kungahuset 2020 will air on TV4 at 8:00 p.m. on December 25.
