The traditional military parade is canceled and replaced by a remote celebration. In a 20-minute speech to the nation, Russian President Vladimir Putin urged people to stay together, just like during the war.
“We know that we are invincible when we are united,” Putin said during the speech, which is broadcast on Russian television.
Russia has the latest Time has seen a rapid spread of the new corona virus. Currently, more than 180,000 have been confirmed infected and 1,700 have died. Over the past week, about 10,000 new cases have been reported each day, and Saturday appears to follow the same pattern.
Putin did not explicitly mention the fight against the coronavirus in his speech, but suggested that there are links between the current difficult situation and the fight against Nazi Germany.
– Our veterans fought for life, against death. And we will always have his unity and endurance, he continued.
In the speech, Putin deposited flowers at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the Kremlin Wall in Moscow. After this, images of an almost empty Red Square were shown.
The speech was followed by an aerial display where helicopters and fighter jets flew over the city, at a contagious distance for Moscow residents to see.
