Psychologist: the party faces the risk of death in the crisis of the crown

In recent weeks, various media have reported on still partying – something that must end to reduce the spread of infection, according to the government.

Johan Waara, a psychologist and active at Uppsala University, believes that it is now important to show “compassion” for one another.

– It’s also about letting go of selfishness, he says.

“It just annoys people”

But acting on what Waara calls covid cops “teaching others” about how they deal with restrictions is far from a winning concept.

– It just annoys people. Instead, you better make sure you take responsibility in your social context. Show a good model of how this should be done, and the rings in the water will overlap, says Johan Waara.

He points out that if someone before the pandemic had asked if they would prioritize going to a party even though it might cause someone else’s death, they would have thought it was a ridiculous question.

– But now these are exactly the questions we ask ourselves: we are in a situation in which the partisan interest of the people is situated in relation to the death of others, says Johan Waara.

Focus on the positive

However, getting the people around you to follow the restrictions more closely is easier said than done. That’s the opinion of Filip Arnberg, associate professor of clinical psychology at Uppsala University. It is similar to the current situation in an uphill marathon: everything hurts.

– To be powerful, it is important not only to focus on the negative, like the depressing crown councils of the government. It is more motivating if we can point out positive aspects, such as the progress of vaccine development. If we have hope and we see the light in the tunnel, we have more strength, says Filip Arnberg.
