First a management goal for PSG and then a red card for Fred, in one minute of play.

That sequence came down to Manchester United and opens for an exciting group finale.

– You may have to raise your hands and say that you should have taken it earlier, says Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to Viasat.

Following Leipzig’s dramatic victory over Istanbul Basaksehir, the demands for the big game at Old Trafford tightened. PSG needed a win to have it all in their hands in the final round.

And it started off perfectly for last year’s finalists. Kylian Mbappé took a shot in the sixth minute that he controlled via Victor Lindelöf and landed on Neymar who from a narrow right angle put the guests 1-0.

Almost red twice in the first

Control of the game perhaps should have tightened when there were a couple of offers for a red card for Fred. He first got away with yellow for a baldness that was verified by VAR and then he kept avoiding action altogether for a stamp on Paredes.

– He’s ugly, he lives dangerously, says Glenn Strömberg in Viasat.

Instead, Manchester United got a ticket to the match in the 32nd minute when Marcus Rashford scored again against PSG with a shot through Danilo’s foot.

Trio on the same score

When everyone thought that PSG would bet forward, Manchester United lined up opportunities. Edinson Cavani fired a shot off the crossbar and Anthony Martial finished off a more or less wide goal.

But the game had another change of scene. In the 69th minute it was only PSG 2-1 after a second wave in a corner that rebounded for Marquinhos. A minute later, Fred’s second yellow card came after a duel in which he was first on the ball against Ander Herrera, but he was judged to go in too violently.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said the former United Herrera midfielder misled the referee.

– I thought Fred was lucky to stay when I saw that the referee would review the first yellow card of the VAR. But the other yellow is nowhere near the yellow and Ander knows it too. He knows it, he says, and then went on to criticize Neymar.

– My players know my values. I want honest players. Scotty (McTominay) could lie down when Neymar grabbed his jewelry but I don’t want them to.

“Sadly done”

Martin Åslund in Viasat’s study harshly criticized the fact that Solskjaer did not replace Fred at half-time with a red card on him.

– It is a decision that is incredibly bad, we are not the ones who are in hindsight but it is deplorably done, he says.

And he was supported by the United manager.

– You may have to put your hands up and admit it. He probably would have picked it up sooner, he says. Viasat according to his reporter Jan Åge Fjørtoft.

– I told Fred during the break that he should be sensible and I think he was. He was unlucky there, but probably lucky at first.

The match ended 1-3 after Neymar contracted the nail in the coffin in extra time. Now United, PSG and Leipzig are all on 9 points ahead of the final round where United will face Leipzig on the road. A Manchester cross is enough to advance mutual encounters, while PSG also manage at least one cross against Istanbul Basaksehir.
