Police have gathered in front of a bank in Bangkok, where the latest of several protests took place.

Thai protesters urge King Maha Vajiralongkorn to relinquish control of the royal family’s huge assets. They are part of the protest movement that has taken to the streets in recent months, demanding a new constitution, the resignation of the Prime Minister and the reduction of the power of the royal family.

Criticism of the monarchy has long been taboo. And on Tuesday several prominent figures of the protest movement were arrested, accused of majesty crimes. Therefore, they run the risk of up to 15 years in prison.

Shortly after Maha Vajiralongkorn became king, he took control of the CPB, which is responsible for managing the fortunes of the royal family. Before that, it was the Minister of Finance who chaired the board that oversaw the CPB.

Assets are shrouded in secrecy and the king has personal control over them, which protesters turn to.
