On Monday May 25, George Floyd, 46, was killed during a police intervention in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Floyd was unarmed when he was arrested, suspected of attempting to use counterfeit bills in a restaurant.
During the intervention, a policeman sat with his knee on his neck for almost nine minutes. The incident was filmed by an individual and the recording shows Floyd, his face pressed to the street and handcuffed, begging for help and saying “please, I can’t breathe”, before running out of life.
The film was released in the United States and aroused revulsion and disgust. A few days after Floyd’s death, protests against police violence began in Minneapolis. The demonstrations quickly spread to other cities and in some places turned violent with looting, riots and shootings.
The four policemen who participated in the intervention have been fired. The cop who put his knee to Floyd’s neck has been notified of suspicion of manslaughter and the other three are suspected of aiding and inciting a crime.
