British royal family
Prince Harry’s words about his father are the hardest blow to the court in the television interview with Oprah Winfrey.
Professor Pauline MacLaran, who has written a book on the British royal family, tells SvD:
– The allegations that Charles stopped talking to him and wanted him to only communicate in writing are very difficult for the royal family.
The interview aired on CBS in the US overnight around Swedish time on Monday, and was then viewed by 17 million Americans. Almost a day later, it was shown in the UK.
More attention was paid to statements by Meghan Markle that she had suicidal thoughts but received no help and that some people in court were concerned about the color of her son Archie’s skin while he was still lying on his stomach.
Prince Harry addressed the relationship with both the queen and her father, Prince Charles. He explained what contacts they had prior to the announcement of Harry and Meghan’s separation from the court a year ago.
– I had three conversations with my grandmother and two with my father before he stopped receiving my calls. Then he said, “Can you write this?”

Harry: it’s sad
When asked by Oprah Winfrey why Charles stopped receiving calls from his son, Harry replied:
– Because I took matters into my own hands. I needed to do it for my family. This does not surprise anyone. It’s really sad that I’ve come this far, but I needed to do something for my own sanity, for my wife, and also for Archie.
Prince Harry said bluntly that he felt abandoned by his father, but that he had no intention of giving up on their relationship.
– There is a lot to work on there. I feel disappointed that he has been through something similar, he knows what pain feels like. And Archie is his grandson. At the same time, I will always love him. I will keep trying to heal the relationship.
Prince Harry says that his brother and father are prisoners.
Teacher: He hurts the head on two fronts.
Pauline MacLaran, Royal Holloway University i London Vine Professor.
Pauline MacLaran is a professor at London’s Royal Holloway University and has written a book on the British royal family in which she investigates, among other things, how Meghan Markle has influenced their brand.
She says the information emerging from the interview damages the reputation of the British court on two fronts. Partly in Meghan’s home country of the United States, where accusations of racism are taken very seriously, but especially at home, where the court for decades tried to tweak the image of Prince Charles as the heartless man who abandoned the princess. Diana.
– Harry is very popular here and the British believe what he says. Allegations that Charles stopped talking to him and wanted him to only communicate in writing are very difficult for the royal family, Pauline MacLaran tells Svenska Dagbladet.

He adds that the image of Prince Charles has already been affected by how he is presented in the latest season of The Crown on Netflix.
– It is difficult for the royal family that the interview with Meghan and Harry was published shortly after Charles and Camilla were portrayed as emotionless in The Crown, Pauline McLaren tells SvD.
Compared to Diana’s interview
The appearance of the prince and princess on Oprah has already been compared to Princess Diana’s famous interview with the BBC in 1995, where she told about the infidelity of Prince Charles, among other things.
– This interview is just as great and there are similarities. There is the same feeling of how Diana burned bridges. What worries the monarchy and the public’s perception of the royal family is that we think Diana’s death brought about a change. Now it seems that change is not enough, expert Sarah Gristwood tells Vanity Fair.

British newspapers about the interview.
In an interview with Oprah, Prince Harry said bluntly that he was concerned that Meghan would face the same tragic fate as her mother:
– I saw how history repeated itself.
Tasks: Desperate Prince Charles
According to Vanity Fair, Prince Harry emailed his father to justify his participation in the television interview. Prince Charles was reported to be “in a state of despair”. Sarah Gristwood says it must be a blow to him to hear how disappointed his son is.
Now that Charles had begun to look like a more popular king than anyone could have imagined, his reputation will take a severe blow. It is difficult to know if Harry is aware of the damage he has caused. Was it really his intention to portray his father and his family in such a bad light? We don’t know, he tells Vanity Fair.
The Royal Family has so far not commented on Harry and Meghan’s interview with Oprah Winfrey.
