People have likely been infected with the crown virus in Sweden as early as November, according to state epidemiologist Anders Tegnell. But the mapping of the cases is not relevant.

Now it doesn’t feel like something we want to burden medical care with, ”Tegnell tells TT.

A man in France was found to be carrying the corona virus on December 27 last year, that is, four days before China reported the first case.

At that time, there are also likely to be individual infected people in Sweden.

“There has been no outreach outside of Wuhan until we saw it in Europe recently,” says Anders Tegnell of the Public Health Authority.

– But I think you can find occasional cases among Wuhan travelers who were there in November – December last year. It doesn’t sound strange at all, but it’s very natural.

Leading nowhere

The Military Summer Olympics were held in Wuhan in late October. A squad of more than 100 people from the Armed Forces lived in the city for two weeks. Several of the contestants became ill during and after the trip and samples of covid-19 were taken, according to NSD.

– None of the people tested showed positive responses, says Anna Lena Hesse of the Department of Defense’s communications department.

Large-scale testing of patients seeking medical attention and sending samples for symptoms such as pneumonia or influenza late last year to see if it could have been covid-19 is not relevant in Sweden at this time.

– There is nothing that is discussed in a structured way, says Tegnell.

– Right now, it doesn’t seem like we want to burden medical care with that kind of research. They have many other things to do and it does not lead to any action.

Future benefits

What may be interesting to discover, according to Tegnell, is how the virus spread in China and how the virus behaved early in the course of the infection. If it was a single spread from an animal to a human, or if it spread to a group of people over an extended period of time.

– We have not been able to detect many times the spread of animal infections to humans by new viruses. We don’t have much knowledge of how things are really going, ”says Tegnell.

– It would be valuable to see how to protect yourself against this type of development in the future.
