So far, five women who worked for Cuomo have come out and said the governor has sexually harassed them. In addition, former employees testify that for decades he has created a “toxic” work environment with verbal attacks, taunts and put-downs from his subordinates, the Washington Post claims.
Two high-ranking party comrades now he comes out and urges him to resign. These are the Senate Majority Leader in the New York State Parliament, Andrea Stewart-Cousins, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives Carl E Heastie. They believe the scandal surrounding Cuomo is disturbing, especially considering that his administration is also accused of having tried to cover up how many people died in nursing homes.
“New York is still in the midst of the pandemic and must face the social, health and economic consequences of it. We must be able to govern without daily distractions. For the benefit of the state, Governor Cuomo must resign,” said Andrea Stewart- Cousins in a written statement.
Carl E Heastie says he “shares the sentiment.”
“We have many challenges to deal with and I think it is time for the governor to seriously consider whether he can effectively meet the needs of the people of New York,” he said in a statement.
Delstaten New Yorks Chief Prosecutor Letitia James has launched an investigation into the sexual harassment allegations against Cuomo, while a federal investigation into the handling of the death toll is underway.
But Cuomo has so far refused to leave his post.
On Sunday, the governor said he wanted to wait until the sexual harassment investigation was completed and said it would be undemocratic to resign in this situation. At the same time, he denied the accusations made by two women. He also claimed that the parliamentarians demanding his resignation or the supreme court have political motives.
– I definitely won’t quit. Let the DA do his research, let’s see what he finds, and then we’ll take it from there.
The Washington Post has reached out to Cuomo for comment on demands for his resignation.
