Preem declared wrong – now receives penalty tax

In a ruling from the Falun Administrative Court, it appears that Preem paid very little in taxes for several years. Each month, Preem pays between seven and eight hundred million kronor in energy and carbon dioxide taxes per month.

The oil company will now pay an additional 74 million, of which 5.6 is a tax surcharge.

The reason is that Preem 2013-2017 provided incorrect information on the proportion of biomass in their products. This means that the company has been able to deduct taxes on carbon dioxide and energy.

The verdict appealed

But Preem has appealed to the Sundsvall Court of Appeal. The company claims that they themselves have drawn the attention of the Tax Agency to the fact that the biomass ratio may have been incorrect.

“We informed the Swedish Revenue Agency as early as January 2017 that we had observed that the proportion of biomass in HVO might need to be adjusted, with the result that the statements made previously would have to be corrected.” Maria Langwall CFO writes at Preem in a comment to DN.

However, the Revenue Agency considers that the corrections cannot be considered voluntary as they were made after the Swedish Revenue Agency began its audit.

According to DN, Preem has been granted a deferral of payment of SEK 5.4 million and the issue of the tax supplement will be decided in the Sundsvall Administrative Court of Appeal.
