Positive corona effect: better air in Gothenburg

[ad_1]

Since measurements began in 1976, the amount of nitrogen dioxide in Gothenburg has exceeded the environmental quality standard, that is, what is considered healthy.

However, due to the corona pandemic, the city may fall below the 2020 threshold for the first time.

– So far, it has been one of the best years since we started measuring. We’ve had low levels of both particulate matter and nitrogen dioxide, which are the air pollutants we have the biggest problem with, says Erik Svensson, environmental researcher in Gothenburg Municipality for SVT.

An important fact is that the inhabitants of Gothenburg drive smaller cars than in a normal year.

The number of cars passing congestion tax tickets during October and November was between 12 and 14 percent more than usual, SVT writes.

“Provides better health”

But it is not only the reduced traffic that has made the difference, but also the mild climate.

In early 2020, it was windy and mild, which is the best climate for good air quality according to Erik Svensson.

In conditions of high pressure and clear weather, the pollutants remain, but instead the toxins disappear.

– Of course it is very positive, it improves the health of the people of Gothenburg, says Erik Svensson to SVT.

But it is not yet clear how much of an effect the year has contributed exactly.
