Yasin Abdullahi Mahamoud, 22, who goes by the artist name Yasin, has just over 1.1 million listeners a month on Spotify and a long list of songs on the charts in recent years, one of Sweden’s most played artists.
This weekend he was arrested on suspicion of imprisonment for kidnapping, a crime he denies. He was arrested at 11 p.m. on New Years Eve, something that Expressen was the first to report on. Then Yasin had been arrested in his absence since December 1, but police did not find him until New Year’s Eve.
The alleged crime was committed on March 30, 2020. Another famous artist is suspected to have been abducted on behalf of Yasin Abdullahi Mahamoud.
Just over a month later, images of the incident spread on social media at a rapid pace. The photos show the victim in a vulnerable situation, trapped and apparently injured. It is said that they stole, among other things, a watch and threatened him with a gun.
Shortly after, the victim herself posted a video on one of her social media accounts. In the video, the artist referred to the scattered images and said that everyone can be kidnapped or beaten. “I am alive and nobody can do what I do and I will continue as long as I live,” the artist said in the video.
– The images are included in the material of the preliminary investigation and are part of the evidence in the case, says the prosecutor of the court Anna Stråth.
Eleven people are suspect for his involvement in the violent kidnapping – all deny it.
– All the suspects have been involved in the act in one way or another. However, not everyone has been to the crime scene in relation to the plaintiffs’ exposure to crime, says Anna Stråth.
The suspects predominantly belong to the Vårbyn criminal network, but some have connections to other criminal groups.
The victim herself does not want participate in research, something that makes research difficult.
– We hope that it will change in that part, says chamber prosecutor Anna Stråth.
It was in September that the investigation into the kidnapping began to move significantly. As DN previously reported, this spring Swedish police became aware of how some 800 Swedish criminals used the encrypted mobile service EncroChat, this after French authorities managed to break into the service’s servers. Some of the material could be linked to the Vårby network and, after going through talks and other things, the police were able to expose several cases of serious criminal acts, including the alleged kidnapping.
– Regardless of the plaintiff’s involvement, we have good evidence of the course of events. The evidence consists of several things, including information from EncroChat. EncroChat information is of great importance in the investigation, says chamber prosecutor Anna Stråth.
Anna Stråth describes the case is very serious and he has previously told DN that this is a multi-part case. There are cases related to the kidnapping case and a total of 24 people are in custody by them, including the leader of the Spring Village Network who was arrested in Spain at the end of October.
Yasin Abdullahi Mahamoud had previously been convicted of a crime. In 2018, he was sentenced to two years and three months in prison for a felony. He has also been detained for three months on suspicion of a murder that occurred on New Year’s Eve around 2020. He was released on March 20, 2020 and then the investigation was closed.
Yasin, who for several years belonged to successful hip-hop collectives and released music online, arrived later in 2020 with his first two solo albums: first “98.01.11” in May and then “More to life” in October. . The music has received appreciative reviews, including on DN, and before 2021, Yasin was also nominated for Artist of the Year at the P3 Gold Music Gala for his collective production.
In November came the hit single “Give Up Again”, a collaboration between artist Miriam Bryant and Yasin. The song, which has been streamed nearly 12 million times on Spotify, is released by record company Warner Music, with which Miriam Bryant is affiliated. In a statement to Expressen, Frida Skogh, a press contact at Warner, says they have no agreement with Yasin.
In the fall of 2020, SVT published a longer interview with Yasin, which also covers the artist’s previous crime. When Yasin is asked in an interview if he has left the criminal behind, he first answers “Can we answer the next question?” Then he says that in “the whole interview is in black and white that I have left it behind.”
DN has sought out the suspect’s lawyer, Frida Wallin, without an answer. She has previously written in an SMS to DN:
“I have no comment other than that my client denies the crime.”
