Politicians react to BB alarms

Since Göteborgs-Posten began writing about the situation in BB at the Östra Hospital in Gothenburg, several mothers and employees have contacted to confirm the images that there have been short staffing and a difficult work environment during the pandemic.

The Sahlgrenska Board is responsible for the operation, management and development of the Sahlgrenska University Hospital. Cecilia Dalman Eek (S) is vice president of the board and she takes the situation seriously.

– I know that it has been very difficult at BB and that an unfortunately unskillly implemented shakeup, which was certainly well thought out, has had effects where in too short a time competition has been reduced overall, he says.

Cecilia Dalman Eek refers, among other things, to the fact that when the nurses showed up at BB this spring, they did not receive enough guidance and support. He also believes that covid problems have come into play, that partners have not been allowed to continue and that sick leave has been higher.

She believes that it is an economic problem, that the extra money from the government that is available for the consequences of the pandemic could have been used to strengthen the staff of BB.

– This is partly a consequence of Sahlgrenska’s underfunding of total maternity care and I am surprised that no one realized that this is also partly a consequence of covid and did something about it with the funds available says Cecilia Dalman Eek.

He also believes that the long-term budget situation is something his newly appointed moderate colleague and chairman of the board must manage.

Gustaf Josefson (M) himself had his third child at Östra Hospital a month ago.

– I am very happy and grateful for the support we receive, so I know that they are a little understaffed with respect to the general situation, he says and adds that he understands that it may be different for those who have their first child. .

Gustaf Josefson trusts the messages he has received from the business management, that they have carried out the service in a good and safe way, but that the situation has become tense.

Do you think there is a staff shortage at BB?

– No, I really didn’t understand that image. So it’s clear that you’ve had to reschedule staff and be a little thinner than you should have and that’s usually because it’s a tense situation.

He disagrees with Cecilia Dalman Eek and has received no signs that it is a financial problem, but says it is more about the overall planning situation.

Do you need to act like a politician?

– No, I do not know if we should act, but it is clear that if there is a problem with the work environment or that there is such a thing, then of course we must act based on what we can do and in this situation it can be to learn more about how the conditions are, if the staff feel it is absolutely terrible then we have to do something.

We have spoken with employees and unions. What information do you need to act?

– What we can do from the board is to request more comments on these issues that have been highlighted, how they have been handled, and how to proceed now. And if you research the work environment, what those investigations provide at hand.
