– We must implement our own reforms, have our own visions, no one should force us to fight for others, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said when he spoke today in the Polish lower house.
From his party mates received applause, while some opposition politicians shouted shame, when Morawiecki justified the government’s decision. The day before yesterday Poland and Hungary vetoed the EU’s multi-annual budget and recovery fund. The countries together would receive around 180,000 million euros.
But to gain the support of the EU, they must follow basic democratic rules such as the rule of law, something the Polish government does not intend to accept.
– We say no to such mechanisms, that they scold us as if we were children, that Poland is treated in this unfair way, said the Prime Minister.
The opposition is strong critical of the government’s decision.
– Vetoing the EU budget is a betrayal of our national interests.
At the nation’s expense, it benefits its own political interests, Borys Budka, leader of the largest opposition party, the Plataforma Ciudadana, told a news conference recently.
Poland has miracles he has been criticized by the EU for several years for trying to gain influence in the country’s courts. Political scientist Marcin Zarowski believes that this is also why this decision was made.
– The government simply wants both the support of the EU and to continue expanding its control over the judiciary, he says.
Tomorrow the Heads of State and Government of the EU will meet, who will discuss, among other things, how to proceed with the issue.
