For a decade Has a man been able to continue committing repeated crimes against children? In several cases, he has returned to those that he exhibited previously. This appears in the documentary series Manipulatören by Ekot and P1. And in the judiciary, there is frustration that it is not possible to stop these types of repeat offenders.
-It’s a frustration that we can’t do more. He’s served his sentence, he’s getting out, so we know it’s only a matter of time before it happens again. We can’t do much, but wait until he commits new crimes. It’s frustrating, it doesn’t feel right, says Daniel Hagthorpe, who has been the police officer in several of the cases.
Already in 2009 he was convicted the man for the first time, among other things, for the rape of a child. He then made a map of the girls and collected images and information that he later used to extort money.
But already when he was on leave, he created an account in the cloud that he later used to continue the crime. This is shown in the Ekot review. Just a few weeks after his release, he continued.
Lena was one of those who was later threatened, this time images and information about her would be disseminated:
– you were scared that I would send this and that people were looking at me suspiciously. Every time I fell asleep I had nightmares. So I prefer to stay awake and watch television, because every time I fell asleep I would dream that something was happening.
When children do not show up for what the man wants, films and pictures are sent to those close to him; in Lena’s case, a movie was distributed to more than 100 email addresses.
The man was condemned again, but shortly after coming out of the closet he continued once more, blackmailing the same girls he had previously exposed.
He has now been convicted four times for a total of 44 crimes. In the latest investigation, according to police, folders were found where he mapped more than 3,000 girls. It has only been processed by a fraction of those who are said to have mapped.
He has denied all crimes and does not want to participate when Swedish Radio seeks him out.
One of the children has been convicted of beating and raping and several others for forcing them to perform sexual acts in front of the webcam.
– I cried a little in front of him when I did all this. But he’s never cared, he just says he should continue.
Some tell in the interrogation how they did not want to live any longer afterwards.
– I started cutting I in the arms. I went through my school, because I think why should I fight? Why should I live? What I did was a shame and I felt a shame for my parents. I’ve probably never felt this bad in my entire life.
Niclas Eltenius, who is now a judge, previously prosecuted the man as a prosecutor:
– Have you not managed to get rid of these images? And there are still photos left and we can never finish this? Will he, over and over, every time he goes out, will he start over in the same way? Says Niclas Eltenius.
He thinks there would be a better chance of controlling this type of repeat offender after serving a sentence.
– That precisely in those cases in which there is a relapse, then you have control in some way. So even if you don’t want to seal the person forever, perhaps for several years, at least after such a repeated crimes verdict of this kind, there might be reasons to have some kind of vigilance.
The man was sentenced no later than 2019. for, among other things, gross slander, exploitation of children for sexual poses and child pornography offenses. Lars Tomth was the judge.
– Yes, we made the assessment that the penalty for what he was convicted of was nine months, but as regards recidivism, the penalty was one year in prison, says Lars Tomth.
But is that what is available then? Three extra months?
– Yes, it was appealed that way, but in any case there was no change in the Court of Appeal. The punishment has become, as I see it, in accordance with practice, so it is up to the Riksdag and the Supreme Court to provide guidance on whether there should be a more severe punishment, for example in case of repeat offenses.
