It was at the end of March that the man employed by the police was at Ikea in Väla and bought things for a total of about 3,500 SEK.
He went through the self-service checkouts and then only scanned products for SEK 316. They left him in the car when he left, he had unpaid things for 3,121 kroner.
The staff thought it looked strange and asked him if he had scanned all the products, and he claimed that he had. Then he walked out the door.
He claimed he was passed out
The guards were called and the man was arrested. When the department store on-duty manager approached him, he showed his identification and said “I have nothing to hide, I am a policeman.”
The staff then responded “you can tell your colleagues” and alerted the police.
As the man claimed that he had received a power outage, investigators asked his superior if he had similar problems in the service. He didn’t have that.
Nor had he sought medical attention for this type of problem.
Aware of what i was doing
The man denied it was a planned robbery. But the Helsingborg District Court finds it clear that he was aware of what he was doing.
While the investigation was ongoing, the man resigned from his job. So the issue never came up in the police personnel accountability committee.
Those who risk losing their jobs often receive a slightly lighter sentence. But since he had already resigned when the trial was held this September, it was not relevant.
The man is sentenced for theft to a suspended sentence and a daily fine of 2,700 Swedish crowns.
