The criminal gangs that operated in Gothenburg over the past week are deeply concerning, according to Police Chief Erik Nord.
The escalation of the gang conflict in Angered is spectacular and can escalate rapidly, but it has also been inflated in the media. This is what Police Chief Erik Nord says, who believes there is only one way to resolve the situation.
– We need more police.
Erik Nord, chief of police in Greater Gothenburg, says this week’s escalating gang conflict has contained “spectacular moments” that have scared many. At the same time, he believes that close information from the media has contributed to the insecurity.
“Deeply disturbing”
– When you report a lot about something, it generates great concerns. But those of us who work with these conflicts know it looks like this. Sometimes we manage to intervene in conflicts that can be just as serious, but it does not make the same headlines, he says and continues:
– But I don’t want to belittle him. The fact that criminals openly show in a show of power that they own the street, at least when we are not there, generates anxiety and is deeply worrying.
He describes it as the security work that has been done at Angered in recent years has taken “big steps back” during the week.
TT: Do you see it as a failure?
– No I do not. It hangs on such fragile threads and can escalate to abnormal violence very quickly on these networks. That each of those results would be a failure, it is not possible to reason like that when working on this. We have to take those situations when they arise.
More police are needed
To solve the problem, ask for more resources from the police authority. The promised investments are highly anticipated and welcome, but not nearly enough. Also, they must happen faster than promised, according to the police chief.
– We need more police. Boots on the ground, that’s what it takes.
The conflicts that erupted earlier in the week have now subsided. The situation in northeast Gothenburg returned to normal on Sunday, says Erik Nord.
– But it’s a bit too early to say, so it’s important to participate.
