Sharing nude photos is often a crime, and those who receive them should be considered victims of crime. This is the police message to children and young people in front of their screens during the fall holidays.
– We must stop the normalization of this behavior, says Crime Commissioner Jan Olsson.
The exchange of “cock photos” has become so normalized that many people hardly react if such a picture is sent to them, says Jan Olsson, commissioner of crimes at the national police cybercrime center.
– You’ve probably gotten so far that you may think it’s disgusting, but then you put it away and think it’s the new normal. But it is not allowed to send images in that way, it is a crime.
During the fall break, the police have an ad campaign on Snapchat and Instagram to report that you may actually commit a crime if you share nude photos online. The goal is also to reduce the stigma of this type of crime.
sexual harassment
Under the law, in many cases it is sexual harassment to send a nude photo to someone who has not requested it. If the recipient is under the age of 15, it is a crime even if the recipient requested the photo.
– As a recipient, you are a victim of a crime and you are a perpetrator if you choose to pass it on to others, says Jan Olsson.
According to him, people often believe that what happens online is not as dangerous as in reality. But it may be the opposite, says Olsson.
– What you say may actually hurt for the moment, but for what is shared on the Internet, the risk is great that it will stay forever, for everyone to participate, he says.
Image can be shared further
Jannike Tillå, director of communications for the Internet Foundation, says many young people find it difficult to see the long-term consequences of sharing images online.
– If you share the photo with someone you like, are you sure what will happen next? Can you trust that it won’t spread and show up to others who don’t want you to see it?
The Children and the Internet Foundation’s 2019 report shows that many parents have poor control of their children’s digital lives. Among parents of children in upper secondary school, only slightly less than one in three feel well known.
That’s very little, believes the Internet Foundation.
– Today’s young people are very visual and communicate a lot with images. So it is not surprising that this communication is also transferred to the images, but it is important that you, as parents, talk to the children and point to the law book, and say that it can actually be a crime to share these types of images , He says.
Why is the image sent?
Often the focus is on the person who is exposed, but it’s also important to talk to those who send pictures, says Jannike Tillå.
– Is it insulting or intimidating? Or is it just an awkward attempt at flirting? It is important to try to find out what is behind it and then explain how it can be experienced for the recipient, and that it is illegal if you have not received the go-ahead from the recipient.
What should you do if you receive a nude photo that you did not request?
– To begin with, you must be clear that you are a victim of a crime. And I think I should save the photo and report it to the police, says Jan Olsson.
