Photographs of the “man from Skellefteå” during the assault on the Capitol

Amid the disaster following the attack on the Capitol in Washington last week, a red scarf marked with the name “Skellefteå” was found. The scarf, which was only made in 1,000 copies, has sparked much speculation as to whether a Swede may have been involved in the attack.

Now Dagens Nyheter can post exclusive photos showing the man wearing the scarf during the dramatic hours that the United States Congress was mugged by a Trump-friendly mob.

The man has a beard and beard a black cap, in his hand he has an American flag and around his neck the red handkerchief with white print that is marked “Skellefteå”. The scarf was commissioned by the municipality of Skellefteå as a Christmas present in 2017.

Helena Renström, Skellefteå Municipality Marketing Director, says they ordered about 1,000 copies.

– We sent a Christmas card to people who had moved from Skellefteå in the last five years where we told them what happened and what was happening in the municipality. There was a link on the Christmas cards and if you entered it you could get a Christmas present; in this case, it was a red scarf because it was Christmas, she says.

Speculation about the Swedes the handkerchief was launched after the local Norran newspaper drew attention to an image showing the handkerchief lying on the ground in the rubble after the storm.

Dagens Nyheter has managed to trace a whole series of images showing who actually wore the scarf. The photos were taken by freelance photographer Alan Chin.

The unpublished photos of Alan Chin show how the man masks himself for the first time with camouflage fabric for his face and how he and the mob press against the police riot fence in front of the Capitol.

After a while, he has passed the barricades and is standing on a wall waving an American flag; by then he no longer has a face mask. However, she always wears Skellefteå’s red scarf around her neck. DN has not been able to find out the identity of the man or if he is Swedish.

After a while, he also wears one of the police riot helmets with a visor.

A policeman died from his injuries. he got when he defended Congress against the mob. A total of five people died in connection with the storm. Police and the FBI are now searching a large number of people suspected of being involved in the attack. It is unclear if the person with the scarf is suspected of any crime.

Photographer Alan Chin says his photos were taken during the time the police defense line is broken.

– I kept looking for when the police reinforcements would come, but they never came and the crowd finally took over the entire area and the police fled into the building.

The man in the scarf was one of those at the forefront

The photos of the man in the scarf they are taken on the west side of the Capitol, over the course of 30 minutes.

– It was 30 minutes when the defense line of the police broke.

– The man with the scarf was one of those in the front row. There were many in the crowd who were passive and mostly watching, but this person was one of the most active, says Alan Chin.

Alan Chin chose to keep a low profile and did not follow him when the mob finally entered the building. The atmosphere was aggressive and, according to Alan Chin, they shouted “Fight for Trump” and “America”. The crowd yelled “traitors” at the police.

– The policemen lost their equipment when they were hit by the crowd, they dropped shields, helmets and truncheons and people started taking them as trophies, he says.

According to another photographer, Samuel Corum, who took the photograph of the abandoned scarf the next day, the scarf was in the same place where a policeman was taken out and down the stairs.

Dagens Nyheter has participated in a list of people who, according to the municipality of Skellefteå, received the scarf as a Christmas gift: a total of 934 people.

Only one of the people on the list lives in the United States: a woman. She tells DN that she never received a scarf without a pair of socks. He doesn’t recognize the man in the photo with the scarf.
