The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the Pfizer-Biontech coronavirus vaccine. The vaccine can now be used for emergency cases in the country.
– I have a good news. Today, our country has achieved a medical miracle. We have developed a safe and effective vaccine in just nine months, says Donald Trump in a video posted on his own Twitter account.
The president says the vaccine is “very safe” and is already on its way to the American people.
– We have already started shipping the vaccine to all states and all zip code areas of the country and the first doses can be administered in 24 hours, he says.
The government’s goal has been to start vaccinating next week, which seems like it could become a reality. According to The New York Times, 2.9 million doses are ready and Pfizer claims that 25 million doses can be produced before the turn of the year.
The United States has bought 100 million doses of the vaccine, and Trump claims the country can buy another 500 million doses. The United States has also agreed with the American pharmaceutical company Moderna 200 million doses of that company’s vaccine. It is expected to be approved in late December.
The United States is not the first to approve and distribute the Pfizer vaccine. Already on Tuesday, the United Kingdom began giving citizens the vaccine, after having approved it in record time the previous week. Canada, Mexico and Bahrain also approved the vaccine.
A total of just over 15.8 million Americans have been infected and just under 295,000 deaths have been reported.
