Ystad’s own Peter Borg describes the meaning of “eel hat” (eel head) as a kinder variant of idiot, an insult usually said with a twinkle in the eye.

But the Swedish Transport Agency does not have the same attitude towards the well-known Scanian word. When Peter Borg applied for permission to have “ÅLAHUE” as a registration plate on the car, he was rejected.

“The combination of characters you requested can be perceived as offensive. Therefore, the Swedish Transport Agency rejects her application “, reads the decision, about which Swedish Radio P4 Malmöhus first wrote.

– They must have googled or read an old Scanian dictionary. I think it’s ridiculous, it’s kind of funny. It doesn’t offend anyone, he says.

Requesting a new word

He came up with the idea of having the word on the license plate a few months ago, but “eel hat” as a word has been around for a long time in Peter Borg’s life.

– I use it quite a bit actually. I think it’s a fun Scanian word that shouldn’t be forgotten. And then I also like eels.

The decision of the Swedish Transport Agency cannot be appealed. But Peter Borg does not give up. You have now submitted a new application for a personal license plate, with the word “ÅLAHO”.

– It has the same meaning but it is a dialect difference, he explains.
