Shortly after 10 a.m. Tuesday, Peter Madsen tried to escape from the Herstedvester institution outside Copenhagen, where he is serving a life sentence for the murder of Swedish journalist Kim Wall.
Bo Yde Sørensen, president of the Association of Prisons, which is a union for prison staff, confirms to Ekstrabladet and BT that a civilian employee was taken hostage and that Madsen was armed with “an object similar to a gun”.
– The weapon was realistic, so the prison guards at the door did not dare to take any risk in relation to the hostage, who they judged to be in mortal danger and chose to leave him out the door. It is a decision that I support. We must not risk anyone being killed and we must find the person afterwards, says Bo Yde Sørensen to Ekstrabladet.
According to him, the prison staff immediately sounded the alarm and went into hot pursuit, but was forced to withdraw after a threatening violent situation. Madsen is also said to have threatened to carry a bomb, Ekstrabladet and BT write.

Peter Madsen was arrested then at Nyvej in Albertslund, just over 500 meters from the prison.
A witness tells BT and Ekstrabladet that he was walking down the street past a white van when police suddenly surrounded the vehicle, opened the door, and pulled Madsen out. This is information that Dagens Nyheter has not been able to confirm.
In photos from the scene, Peter Madsen was sitting on the grass next to a bush in front of a police car. A short distance away, two policemen lay on the ground with guns pointed at him along with dog patrols, a robot bomb and the police bomb squad.
According to Ekstrabladet, Peter Madsen had a belt-like object around his stomach and the police had a merchant on the scene. Police made sure that a bus on the street blocked Madsen’s transparency.
At 12.25 BT wrote that the police from the bomb squad have begun to approach Peter Madsen. Police wrote on Twitter at 1:06 p.m. that the Nyvej operation was over and that a man had been arrested and removed from the scene. According to the Danish media, Madsen was kidnapped by the police.
Just before 2 pm, the police announced that they had lifted the roadblocks in Roskildevej and Vridsløsevej alongside Nyvej.
The police invite you to a press conference at 3.30 pm.
According to Ekstrabladet, Madsen has previously been in solitary confinement in prison due to suspicions of escape plans.
