The attack started in the area by Resecentrum in Vetlanda.
Göran Åhlander, 64, witnessed the man stabbing people with a long knife. He tried to save a man.
– He had a big hole in his stomach. I pressed both hands against the hole, he says.
Aftonbladet meets 64-year-old Göran Åhlander at the crime scene the day after the attack. He is sad but has clear memories of what happened. Around 3 p.m., he sees a man in dark clothes running out of the Travel Center. So everything happens very fast. He sees a man sitting on the victim and cutting multiple times.
– I yelled, “What the hell are you doing?” Then he ran away. If I hadn’t yelled at him, they would have been even worse.
– A man collapses near the bike racks. I don’t know if I should help him or run after the perpetrator, says Göran Åhlander.
He quickly decides to save lives first and foremost. The man, whom Göran recognizes, has a stomach wound. Bleeding profusely from a wound. Göran tries to stop the bleeding with his hands.
– I got very sad in my hands. The man had defended himself from the attack and also had wounds on his hands, says Göran Åhlander.
He perceives that the man is in great pain.
– He’s conscious and says “oh, oh, oh”.

The perpetrator has attacked someone else. That person receives help from the Press Office staff. According to Göran, the victim receives help inside the store.
The perpetrator then disappears from Resecentrum in the direction of Storgatan.
– He had a knife about 20 centimeters long, almost like a bayonet, says Göran Åhlander.
For about 15 to 20 minutes, Göran struggles to stop the bleeding. You are assisted by an additional person in the Travel Center. They take turns pressing on the man’s wounds.
– Then an ambulance arrives and the rescue service takes over.

The first alarms came from Bangårdsgatan, where Resecentrum is located.
