People with Down syndrome are said to have no priority in vaccinating against covid-19. In addition to the cancellation of the first injection of the vaccine, people who have tried to reserve a vaccination period have also been rejected on the grounds that now only the elderly should be vaccinated. The Swedish Down Association tells Swedish Radio Ekot.
– The risk for people with Down syndrome who are 40 years old is roughly the same as for a person in their 80s, says Anna Brandström, vice president of the Swedish Down Association, on Swedish Radio Ekot.
Therefore, the Swedish Down Association requires that the Public Health Agency give priority to people with Down syndrome.
– We see that now those with a lower risk condition are vaccinated, before those with a higher risk condition. I think that’s wrong, says Anna Brandström.
All adults with Down syndrome up to age 59 are included in phase 3 of the order of priority. But the majority of people with Down syndrome receive interventions according to the LSS and end up in phase 2, which also includes the elderly over 65, and according to current guidelines, it is those over 65 who are they must be given priority.
