A long list of politicians condemned what happened earlier in the day. Several of them praised the police and secret service that protected them when the storm started. And Republican politicians claimed that what will happen now is that Joe Biden will be recognized as the next president of the United States. Several Democrats pointed to the guilt of President Trump in what happened.
Mitch McConnell (right), som is the Speaker of the Senate, said:
– We will confirm the winner of the 2020 presidential elections. Criminal behavior will not affect Congress. The American people deserve no less.
Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer said he had never experienced anything like it.
– Unfortunately, we can add January 6, 2012 to the infamous days that will be remembered for a long time. We cannot call these protesters, they were American terrorists. They have to be judged and they do not deserve mercy.
Schumer also noted singled out President Trump as the reason for what happened:
– What happened did not happen by itself. The president highlighting the conspiracy theories is a big part of what happened. Their lies inspired them. What happened today would never, ever have happened without him.
Several Democrats said that it was not the task of Congress to investigate possible electoral fraud, this is the responsibility of the states. Once the states have determined that everything has gone well, they approve the electoral votes that will now be confirmed by Congress.
Various Republicans and Democrats made clear Wednesday night that they wanted to continue to pass electoral votes showing that Joe Biden and Kamala Harris will take office as president and vice president in two weeks.
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, said earlier in the evening, Swedish time, that she and other members of Congress have decided to continue the work of approving the election results. This as soon as the police have been able to secure the Capitol.
– Our goal will be achieved, says Pelosi.
One of the Republicans who questioned the election result said in an interview during the evening that he will continue to do so but in a more civilized way:
“It is my duty,” said Republican Congressman Markwayne Mullin.
Mullin defends those like him He calls “protesters” and says that it was a small group that separated from those who caused the problems:
– I love them, I don’t hate them. I love them. But there is a right way and a wrong way, Mullin told ABC.
