He is the initiator of the group “The consecration service in the diocese of Härnösand that supports Archbishop Eva Nordung Byström” who in a debate post believes that the situation in the diocese is extremely strange.

The group has previously compiled names in support of the bishop and a large proportion of the diocese’s ordained priests have signed. Now the group points out that the diocesan board’s attempt to remove the bishop is completely contrary to the order of the church. “The bishop is the one who sets the agenda in a diocese, and that is something a diocesan board must relate to,” it is written.

Contrary to the order of the church

The group also points to a series of circumstances that make the diocesan board unable to remove a bishop. “The diocesan board does not even have the right to exercise oversight over a bishop elected in accordance with church ordinance. This assignment falls on the Episcopal College and the Bishops’ Responsibility Board ”. It is believed that the diocesan council now trying to exercise oversight and taking action against a bishop is completely outside of his mandate and contrary to the order of the church.

– As if a restaurant wanted to fire the health inspector, the bishop is chosen to exercise supervision and direct the work in the diocese. And it is almost impossible to be more than critical of such action, says Andreas Sundström, parish priest of Skön parish and one of the initiators of the group that supports the bishop.

No objective reason

Finally, it is pointed out that there is no factual basis for removing the bishop. There are no written documents, impact evaluation, or consultation with the Episcopal College or the responsible committee.
