In both Västerås and Linköping, the holidays are noted as sources of crown buds among students. In one case, the infection spread despite the organizers taking steps to avoid congestion.

31 students at the University of Mälardalen have been confirmed to be infected with the coronavirus, reports SVT Västmanland. All those affected are studying economics and the outbreak is related to a launch party for freshmen in Västerås.

– It is very unfortunate that this has happened. We have been urging our students since the beginning of the pandemic to keep their distance and follow the guidelines for infection control, Malin Gunnarsson, acting director of administration at the University of Mälardalen, tells SVT.

The university and the infection control unit have decided that all affected students will transfer to distance education for two weeks. Those who have attended the party, or have known others who have, are encouraged to stay home.

In Linköping, the story is similar. Corren reports that at least ten Linköping University students who have been to the same party have been confirmed infected with covid-19.

According to the region’s infection control, the party organizers had taken steps to prevent congestion and avoid infection, but despite this, the infection spread at the party. Now the region wants the university to do more to prevent more similar incidents.

– The university cannot decide what students do in their free time, but the university management can come out with information and remember the recommendations of the Public Health Agency, says infection control doctor Britt Åkerlind to Corren.
