Social Democrats’ annoyance is growing as negotiations on Sweden’s future migration policy are taking off.
The other parties in the Migration Committee complain that they do not know what the Government wants in sensitive matters.
TT has spoken to the eight parliamentary parties in the Migration Committee before today’s meeting and it is obvious that there are many conflicts. The most difficult thing is obtaining broad support for a comprehensive proposal.
Various divisive issues are on the agenda. For example, if you are going to introduce a volume target for immigration? How should more rejected asylum seekers be allowed to leave the country? And what requirements should be imposed on those who want a permanent residence permit? Do you need to know Swedish?
Easier for S
For the first time, the parties have a holistic proposal on the table, which the Political Secretariat has prepared. There, volume targets have been renamed the least controversial “benchmark”.
– It has been done well to make it easier for the Social Democrats to negotiate it, says Christina Höj Larsen, spokesperson for the Left Party’s immigration policy, to TT.
It is the Social Democrats who are at the key to a comprehensive agreement. But right-to-left parties complain that the largest Riksdag party so far has not shown the cards in the discussions.
The party’s representative on the committee, Rikard Larsson, told TT last week that he does not want to comment on individual proposals in the media. He does it on commission.
Instead, he reiterated the party’s general entry into the negotiations.
– We believe that it is the limited time residence permits that should be the main rule. We don’t think one can fall too far outside the temporary law on residence permit rules, said Rikard Larsson.
He also said that there should be opportunities for family reunification and that protection for humanitarian reasons should be provided. But he said nothing about any details, and that’s where the conflicts are hidden. Like, for example, how difficult the living requirements must be for those who want to bring their family here.
Prepared to reason
“There are also questions where we have said that one can try different ideas and reasons for what this might mean, such a question are the goals for asylum policy, which moderates in particular have highlighted,” Larsson said.
TT: What M calls volume targets, but is now called benchmark?
– There is no such thing as not having stepped on the ground.
The Migration Committee has been meeting since September last year and now time is running out if the parties must agree. The goal is to be ready with a proposal by the end of July.
